'Carlos is still the king' says Smith

Wayne Smith defends Spencer
All Blacks assistant coach Wayne Smith has come out in defence of first five-eighth Carlos Spencer, who has found himself in the firing line after a less than competent performance against the Springboks in Christchurch on the weekend. Spencer's critics believe it is time for rising star Daniel Carter to replace the enigmatic Spencer in the No.10 jersey, but Smith - who played 17 Tests for the All Blacks at first five-eighth - has faith in the incumbent's abilities. Spencer was well off his best against the Boks, and was unable to stamp his authority on the game whilst under pressure from a determined South African defence. "Anyone can have a poor night, and Carlos would say it was a difficult night," said Smith. "But he showed a lot of composure to come through." "There is not a lot you can do other than just kick and hope. It was a difficult night yet he came through it better than a lot of other first five-eighths would have." Spencer is well known for his high-risk play, and while he did not enjoy a prosperous night, he stamped his signature on the final move of the match - throwing out a long, looping pass to put winger Doug Howlett away in the corner to win the game in the final minute of play. "He is a genius on his day and when he was not on it [at Jade Stadium] he still came through pretty well," said Smith. And while Smith is well aware of Carter's attributes, he does not believe the 22-year-old Crusaders star has the necessary experience to marshal the backline in the No.10 jersey. "He has to come out of himself a wee bit in terms of dictating play and being more vocal, said Smith. "He has to learn how to boss a game." |
