Weakest Link Rugby Special - part 8

Near the conclusion

The charity Rugby Special of the quiz show The Weakest Link is now within a few questions of reaching its touching conclusion. The show was broadcast first on 20 March 2004 and repeated at the end of October and just recently.

When asked for it, the BBC were kind enough to send us a tape of the programme, which we have been presenting, round by round, as it now gets down to the business of winning the money. We shall publish the conclusion tomorrow.

Nine international players started facing Anne Robinson who was not nearly as grim and foreboding as she usually is.

The players, all internationals, taking part were Will Greenwood, Colin Charvis, Brian Moore, Geordan Murphy, Matt Dawson, Simon Taylor, Thomas Castaignède, Matt Dawson and Martin Bayfield.

Each round the contestants vote off a player dubbed the weakest link. In order those who voted off in the first four rounds were Healey, Dawson, Castaignède, Charvis, Murphy, Bayfield and Moore. That leaves solemn Greenwood and boyish Taylor for Round 8.

There is £5,000 available each round. The team managed to bank that in each of the first two rounds.

QA is Anne Robinson.

QA: Round 8 and the kitty is up to £21,200. There are two of you left. In this round you've got just 90 seconds but whatever you win will be trebled. We'll start with the strongest link from the last round, which isn't Will. It's Simon. Let's play The Weakest Link. Start the clock.

QA: Simon, in entertainment the TV presenter Kerry McFadden is a former member of which all-female pop group?
ST: Atomic Kitten

QA: Will, in fashion on a shirt sleeve what name is given to the band which encircles the wrist?
WG: That would be the cuff.

QA: Simon, which three-letter word is a respectful term of address once commonly used by schoolchildren when talking to male schoolteachers?
ST: Sir

QA: Will, in sport a team that has played fewer league matches than rival teams is said to have games in what?
WG: Hand

QA: Simon, what is the name of the group of bacterias that are a common cause of food poisoning - diphtheria or listeria?
ST: Listeria

WG: Bank!

QA: Will, in maths what is 66 divided by two?
WG (with relief): 33

QA: Simon, which super hero wears a cape and a mask with ears and has a yellow badge on his chest with the silhouette of a flying mammal?
ST: Batman

QA: Will, in sport which 2003 biography by the rugby union player Jason Robinson is called Finding my what?
WG: Feet

QA: Simon, in food an entrecot is a cut of what meat - beef or lamb?
ST: Lamb
QA: Beef!

QA: Will, in geography the ports of Colon and Balboa stand at either end of which canal in Central America?
WG: That must be the Panama

QA: Simon, in clothing the name of which delicate, decorative material goes after shoe and boot to give two means of fastening footwear?
ST (thinks): No
QA: Lace!

QA: Will, in TV what is the full name of the presenter of the series Film 2004?
WG (in haste): Barry - no John Ross

The music comes crashing down.

QA: No, I have to accept your first answer. The correct answer is Jonathan Ross. And you banked between you £1,500, which we'll treble. That means prize money tonight of £25,700. But only one of you can take that money away. So now you'll play against each other, head to head, best of five questions.

To be concluded .................
