Rugby Ontario Junior Women Invited to Canada U-19 Tryouts
Thursday September 22 2005
Camp to be held from October 6th-10th, 2005
Toronto-Rugby Ontario is pleased to announce that Rugby Canada has released the National Under-19 Womens Team 2006 long-list of players being considered to represent Canada at the U19 level. The list contains the names of 70 players who have been identified this year 15 of which are from the 2005 Rugby Ontario National Champion U17 and U19 junior womens teams.
I am really excited at the new prospects coming through to the Canadian under 19 levels. The National championships in BC proved to be a good recruitment ground as the level of play from all provinces demonstrated the great strides that womens rugby has taken in Canada over the past few years, indicated Natascha Wesch Canadian U19 Head Coach. Fifteen Ontario athletes have been named to the long list due to the level of play by both Ontario U17 and U19 teams who captured gold at the championships. Junior womens rugby in Ontario has taken a leap in the past few years due to the level of athletes coming through but also due to the excellent coaching teams in place with the elite representative programs, continued Wesch. Long-listed athletes will be invited to attend a selection camp to be held from October 6th-10th, 2005 at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. At this camp, players will be evaluated based on fitness, rugby and athletic skills, teamwork and game play. Based on the selection camp, a squad will be selected to compete in a two-match series vs. England U19 in February, at Shawnigan Lake School, BC. Additionally, a squad will also be selected to compete in the summer of 2006 at a venue and event to be determined.
